Offered here is a participationmedal issued to a donor at the 1908 London Olympics. The Games of the IV Olympiad were originally scheduled to takeplace in Rome but were relocated for financial reasons. Lasting 187days these Games were the longest in modern Olympic history. Designedby Bertram Mackennal and minted by Vaughton & Sons (BirminghamEngland) participation medals were struck in silver-gilt silverbronze and pewter like this one. The silver-gilt silver and bronze medals were offeredto the officials and those who did not compete.

This pewter version measures 50mm in diameter and 3.5mm thick weighing 48 grams.The obverse depicts a Greek four-horsed chariot with two men (the driverand the judge) about to award the victory palm to the winning athlete.The reverse features a winged Fame standing on a globe between legendbetween two raised relief inscriptions: "In Commemoration of the OlympicGames held in London 1908" on the right and "Elis Athens Paris St.Louis London" on the left to denote the order of host cities to thatpoint. Designer noted on both sides: "BM" on bottom of obverse and"B.MACKENNAL" on bottom of reverse. "VAUGHTON" engraved on theupper edge. Presents in Extremely Fine condition with light wear and no visible tarnishing.

Comes in an original blue presentation case lined in purple velvet that is typically paired with silver or gilt-silver donor participation medals. (Most donor medals made of pewter come in brown cases.) The outside of the caseis inscribed "OLYMPIC GAMES OF LONDON. 1908. DONOR" in gold.
