After a 4th place finish in the American League’s inaugural season the Philadelphia Athletics won the 1902 pennant with a record of 83-53. Lead by manager Connie Mack the A’s had to overcome the loss of star second baseman Nap Lajoie when he was awarded to Cleveland due to a conflict with the rival National League who claimed the rights to his contract. Showing the baseball intellect that would eventually earn him 5 world championships Connie Mack adjusted to the loss of his star and guided his team to its first pennant. 24 of those 83 wins were due to Rube Waddell’s magical right arm. With his erratic behavior temporarily harnessed by the patient Mack 1902 proved to be Waddell’s breakout season and the first of six consecutive seasons of leading the league in strikeouts. This rare pinback captured the entire pennant winning 1902 team decked out in their civilian attire surrounding their leader Connie Mack whose likeness forms the centerpiece of his composite. The pinback measures 2 inches in diameter. The metal frame shows medium wear while the collage of Athletics players has taken on an amber tone from age. The celluloid surface has been scratched in areas particularly around Connie Mack’s image. The reverse has an intact pin system and shows toning from age. LOA from the Jake Virtue Estate.
