The Boston Marathon has been around since 1897. In its third running the 24.5 course was won by a blacksmith from Cambridge Mass. named Lawrence Brignolia in 2:54:38. Finishing in fifth place that year was a gentleman by the name of R. F. Hallen out of New York who conquered the course in 3:04:59. This is the trophy that Hallen won that day for finishing in fifth place. The 17-pound award is apparently made of either cast bronze or copper and shows acquired patina (discoloration) over time. The figure is of a bearded blacksmith and comprises most of the trophy since the very first Boston Marathon was won by John J. McDermott a blacksmith and carpenter by trade. The 5th Place trophy which includes an engraved plaque at the bottom with Hallen's name engraved stands nearly 25 tall and has a circular base that includes the tools of the blacksmith trade.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
