Featured here is an ancient 1890s era eight spoke leather strap helmet and Morrill nose guard. The top of the eight-spoked leather crown has a circular opening two inches in diameter. Thin leather strips cover the outside of the helmet and 2/3 inch thick cotton lining adorns the interior. The donut ring ear protectors that should be attached to the leather crown at the sides have completely separated - understandable for a piece of equipment over 120 years old. The plain twill chinstrap that fastens to the ear protectors is intact although it doesn't do much good with the ear flaps torn off. The leather on the headgear and ear flaps has aged with some signs of cracking yet still presents very well and strong. The helmet comes in Good overall condition.
The accompanying Morrill nose guard (circa 1891) is in slightly better condition than the helmet with all elements essentially intact. Classic embossed lettering reads "MORRILL'S PATENT NOSE MASK" on the front with a barely legible "PATD SEPT.29 1891" on the inside. The guard measures 6 1/2" tall by 3" at its widest point near the mouth. The bite plate shows a little use. The cloth strap is intact although it's seen its better days. Overall it presents in EX condition. Quite the unique set of early pre-1900s football equipment!
