Take home a Hall of Famer from one of the more interesting card issues of the 19th Century, 1888 Scrapps Tobacco. The short checklist of 18 die-cut cards featured the starting nine for the Detroit Wolverines and St. Louis Browns.
Presented here is a colorful 1888 Scrapps Tobacco Dan Brouthers in an SGC VG-EX+ 4.5. Of the 27 graded by SGC, this one stands alone as the highest rated example; the next closest is VG 3. Only eight show up in the PSA Pop Report, one graded EX-MT 6 and the rest all GD+ 2.5 or lower. This card exhibits almost no surface wear and the colors are extremely eye popping. The reverse is blank and has a few minor spots but overall a beautifully preserved 19th century relic.
Brouthers started his career with the Troy Trojans (1879-80) before starring for the Buffalo Bisons with whom he won back-to-back National League batting titles (.368 in 1882 and .374 in 1883). A Triple Crown contender almost every year, the first baseman spent three seasons in Detroit before successful stints with the Boston Beaneaters, Boston Reds (PL/AA), Brooklyn Grooms and Baltimore Orioles. "Big Dan" won a total of five batting titles, led the league in home runs and RBI twice, and earned his Cooperstown plaque posthumously in 1945.
