December 22, 2002 marked the end of an era in San Diego: it was the final game Junior Seau ever played in a Chargers uniform, a road contest against the Kansas City Chiefs that closed Seau's 13th season with his hometown team that drafted him out of USC. In a 24-22 loss, Seau recorded five tackles including one for a loss. (He was inactive in Week 17). In the offseason, San Diego traded its all-time great linebacker to the Miami Dolphins.
Offered here is the game-worn jersey Seau wore that day, conclusively photomatched to the contest by Resolution Photomatching. The white Reebok jersey bears Seau's name on the upper back in navy blue tackle twill letters, with his iconic uniform number "55" on the front, back, and sleeves in navy blue outlined in white and yellow. The shoulders have the patented Bolts logo and the sleeve ends are custom hemmed to Seau's liking. Properly tagged within the collar with a "02-50" year and size strip tag, the mesh knit jersey has an additional Reebok label on the front left tail with "6" L.B." and size "50" flag tags. The jersey exhibits evidence of moderate wear with scratch and contact marks on the front numbers and appears to have been washed post-use.
Seau earned his 12th consecutive Pro Bowl selection that season, a testament to his remarkable consistency across a career that made him the face of the franchise for over a decade and a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. Few artifacts carry the emotional weight of a "final game" jersey, particularly one belonging to a player as beloved — and, following his tragic suicidal death in 2012, as mourned — as Junior Seau. This jersey stands as a poignant bookend to one of the great individual runs in Chargers history, worn the very last time Seau ever took the field for the only NFL team most fans will ever associate him with.
