Almost 20 years after walking on the moon astronaut Neil Armstrong the mission commander for the fabled Apollo 11 moon landing in July of 1969 responded to an enthusiastic letter from Mrs. Hesters class at Cooper Middle School in Clayton N.C. On a typewritten 8.5-by-11-inch page Armstrong thanks the children for their letters and notes that he was unable to answer each letter individually. He writes "The study of the exploration of space is a fascinating subject" and expresses his regrets that he was unable to include brochures or photos but wishes them progress in their studies and good luck. The letter is in wonderful condition essentially Near-Mint and includes its original postmarked envelope (Ex-Mt) with some extraneous printing on the other side and the expected tearing at the opening to extract the letter. Also included in the lot is a Near Mint black-and-white Wire photo of the astronaut measuring 5-by-6.5 inches with the typical news service stamping on the back that has faded from aging but is still legible.
