This action-packed shot shows Joe DiMaggio flying around the bases after hitting a triple off Ellis Kinder in the bottom of the 6th during the October 2, 1949, game against the Red Sox. Red Sox right fielder Al Zarilla can be seen mid-tumble as the ball rolls free and umpire Eddie Rommel looks on. While any Yankees-Red Sox game is important, this one happened to determine the 1949 American League pennant. The Yankees staged a late-season surge that chiseled away at Boston’s lead, and the two teams went into the last game of the season tied. Though DiMaggio’s 6th inning triple didn’t plate a run, the Yankees overcame a 9th inning Boston rally to beat the Sox 5-3 and clinch the pennant.

The Type 1 photo measures 7 1/8” x 9” and shows edge wear and some creasing to the white border. The photo has taken on a warm patina with age. The back of the photo has the International News Service credit stamp, the remains of the original credit slug and some staining from water and glue residue. The photo has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
