Wayne Gretzky made his Sports Illustrated debut as the cover star on October 12, 1981, while in the midst of his sophomore season with the Edmonton Oilers. He was in the midst of his second of eight straight MVP seasons, and the SI cover deemed him "Best Player in the NHL" for good reason. The issue is graded 8.0 by CGC.
