Despite playing 21 seasons in the big leagues playing both outfield as well as first base and recording a career .985 fielding percentage Hall of Famer Willie Stargell never won a Gold Glove. With Steve Garvey and KeithHernandez winning the majority of Gold Glove awards for National League first basemen during a large part of Stargell’s career Pops let his bat do the talking by launching thunderous home runs in ballparks around the league. This lot features an unusual trophy that Rawlings awarded to Stargell near the end of his farewell MLB season of 1982.

The Rawlings-issued 1962-1982 career bronzed glove trophy was officially presented to the hulking first baseman on September 23 1982 less than two weeks from the final game of his Hall of Fame career. Sitting on top of a three-tiered wooden base that measures 17.5” across is a bronzed first baseman’s glove. Based on our experience with other game-used items that have been preserved in bronze or other metal coatings we have concluded that inside the metal finish is a glove Stargell used during the latter years of his playing days. On the front of the wooden base is a gold plaque that reads “In honor of his illustrious 20 year Pirate career Rawlings is proud to present this glove to the Pirate Team Captain WILLIE STARGELL September 23 1982.”  It waspresented to Stargell on the same the visiting Pirates downed the host Cardinals 5-3 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Letter of Provenance from Margaret Weller-Stargell.
