In 1979 all the pieces fell into place for the Pittsburgh Pirates and their tireless patriarch first baseman Willie Stargell. The 39-year-old Stargell playing in his 18th major league season had a terrific year at the plate ashe collected 119 hits including 32 home runs and knocked in 82 runs. He was named National League MVP as the Pirates locked up the N.L. East flag. In the ensuing playoffs “Pops” Stargell caught fire as he first led the Bucs to the N.L. pennant by batting .455 during a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the NLCS. He then guided the Pirates to their second World Series title in nine years by hitting .400 (12 hits three home runs and seven RBI) in a four-games-to-three victory over the A.L. Champion Baltimore Orioles. Not only was Stargell named the league’s MVP but also the NLCS and World Series MVP a trifecta never accomplished by any other player in MLB history.
This elegant piece is the smaller player's version of the coveted World Series trophy presented to players on the winning club every November. The prize is arranged upon a 2 1/2-inch tall 7 1/4-inch in diameter wooden base whosesurrounding gold-colored band reads "WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS / PITTSBURGH PIRATES / 1979 / WILLIE STARGELL - MVP." Atop the black base a 5"-diameter gold-colored band has a silver-colored baseball at its base and a very detailed gold crown figure at the top. Surrounding the base are 26 gold-colored flags that in alphabetical order bear the names of each Major League team at that time; the banners gradually ascend in size from 5-1/2" to 9-1/2"." The trophy comes essentially as-issued but does include two of its gold flags (Mets and Expos) being slightly bent at the tips. This is an important sports artifact not only from the Pirates’ organization but also from one of its most beloved players of all time the late great Willie Stargell.
Letter of Provenance from Margaret Weller-Stargell.
