In the whole history of thoroughbred racing no jockey has won more important races than Willie Shoemaker. In a career that stretched from 1954 through 1990 Shoemaker was the winning jockey in eleven Triple Crown Races: 4 Kentucky Derby’s two Preakness’s and five Belmont Stakes. In September of 1970 “The Shoe” registered his 6033rd win making him the winningest jockey in racing history. Every one of the 2800 subsequent wins before his retirement in 1990 was a new record.
This pair of well-worn riding boots were worn by Shoemaker during his career. The interior of each boot has a number “1” and Marino company stamping. Shoemaker has signed the brown tops of each boot in black marker adding “6033 Wins.” The boots show medium use with nicely broken-in leather and visible wear to the leather soles and heal. An outstanding signed group from the most famous jockey in racing history. This piece includes a signed letter of provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
