Offered here are two important tributes given to legendary Dodgers manager Walt Alston who directed the fortunes of the club for 23 seasons between 1954 and 1976 winning 2040 games seven National League Pennants and four World Series crowns. He won six Manager of the Year awards over that span along with countless accolades that took notice of contributions even beyond the rigors of being skipper for the Dodgers. Here then are two such awards from the baseball writers in Chicago one an elaborately adorned wall plaque with a stunning 8-by-10-inch burnished image of Alston on gold plating and a second diamond shaped plaque from the same organization but six years later in 1970. First the 1964 plaque which boasts that burnished image of Alston along with a nameplate underneath that reads: “The J. Louis Comiskey Memorial Award to Walter Alston for long and meritorious service to baseball Jan. 12 1964” with additional engravings of Chicago Chapter and the Baseball Writers Association of America logo underneath. Along with intricate design flourishes for framing around both sections the plaque has gold eagle and leaf embellishments on the top and sides and a gold pedestal featuring a silver baseball at the bottom all backed by polished wood backing. The second plaque a diamond shaped gold nameplate with slightly larger polished wood background reads as follows: “The Chicago Chapter of the BWAA presents to Walter Alston the J. Louis Comiskey Memorial Award for long and meritorious service to baseball” with the BWAA logo and 1970 engraved below. Both plaques are in superb condition extremely well preserved in the ensuing decades and in most cases largely as-issued and problem-free often revealing only the light tarnishing of gold-plated sections or nominal nicks or bruises to wood back borders.
Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from the Walter Alston Collection.
