This attractive silver cup trophy was awarded to legendary Dodgers manager Walt Alston who directed the fortunes of the club for 23 seasons between 1954 and 1976 winning 2040 games seven National League Pennants and four World Series crowns. Back in the years before interleague play in Major League Baseball those rare instances of two-team cities would often promote informal rivalries between the clubs like the Southern California Freeway Series between the Dodgers and crosstown rivals the Angels who joined the American League as an expansion team in 1961. Alston and the Dodgers retained the trophy with a split in the annual two-game exhibition with the trophy indicating “tie” on the silver band at the base. A silver batter sits atop a loving cup with ornate engraved handles which in turn is mounted on a circular wooden base. The previously mentioned silver band has engraving that reads “Presented to the 1969 Freeway Series So. California Champion Dodgers 1969 Tie” stacked on four lines. All elements of the trophy seem to be in largely as-issued and problem-free condition revealing only some of the expected tarnishing or chipping of small silver paint sections at the base.
