From 1950 to ’53 Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn Dodgers’ AAA affiliate the Montreal Royals of the International League. The team won between 86 and 95 games during each season of Alston’s tenure including International League pennants in both 1951 and ’52. Following the 1953 season Brooklyn Dodgers’ Skipper Charlie Dressen insisted on a multi-year contract to continue as Dodger manager. Brooklyn Owner Walter O'Malley balked at the demand and to everyone's surprise chose the little known Alston to pilot the club.
Alston led the Dodgers to a second place finish in 1954 then won the pennant and Brooklyn's only World Series Championship in 1955 defeating the mighty New York Yankees in seven games. The unflappable homespun Ohioan would continue to manage the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 straight seasons. During that span Alston's Dodger teams suffered only four losing campaigns despite franchise relocation and competing in three different home parks.
The offered uniform is from Walt’s first season at the helm of the Dodgers. Inside the back collar of the jersey is a blue felt label reading "Alston Mgr. size 44 No. 24-1954" denoting player name size jersey number and year respectively. This information is sewn on in white stitching. Adjacent is the "Wilson" label. Across the front of the jersey is the team name "Dodgers" in script-style lettering. On the back is the player number "24". Both the team name and player number are done in blue felt. Inside the front right waistband of the pants is a white felt label reading "Alston Mgr size 37 inseam 27 No. 24- 1954" denoting player name size inseam player number and year respectively. This information is sewn on in black stitching. Adjacent is the "Wilson" label. Both the pants and jersey show good wear with minimal soiling and appear to have no alterations of any kind. This is the crown jewel of flannel to emerge from Walt’s personal collection.
Includes LOA from the Alston Family.
