After assistant coaching gigs in college at his alma mater Fordham and West Point (Army) Vince Lombardi got his first NFL job in 1954 with the New York Football Giants under head coach Jim Lee Howell. With Lombardi as offensive coordinator and Tom Landry as defensive coordinator Hall of Famers Frank Gifford Sam Huff and Roosevelt Brown plus All-Pro Alex Webster it all came together for the Giants in 1956. They went 8-3-1 in the regular season to earn a berth in the NFL Championship where they dismantled George Halas’ Chicago Bears by the score of 47-7.
Said Lombardi biographer David Maraniss "Howell readily acknowledged the talents of Lombardi and Landry and joked self-deprecatingly that his main function was to make sure the footballs had air in them.” One of the major offensive strategies Lombardi came up with in New York was “rule blocking” where offensive lineman would block an area instead of one particular player allowing the ball carrier to “run to daylight.” The Giants rushed for 2129 yards and 18 touchdowns in the ’56 regular season an average of 177 per game. In the championship game the offense mixed it up with 126 yards and three scores on the ground and 222 yards and two scores through the air.
For his monumental efforts that season to deliver New York its first championship in 18 years Lombardi received this gorgeous 1956 World Championship 10-karat gold ring. A 20-point real diamond sits atop a dark blue stone with "N.Y. GIANTS WORLD CHAMPIONS N.Y. 47 CHI. 7" surrounding the perimeter. The right shank has a raised "NFL 56" and the left shank depicts the Giants logo over the New York skyline and "19" at the bottom. Inside is engraved ‘V.T. Lombardi” in lovely script lettering along with the hallmark "DIEGES & CLUST 10 KARAT" stamp. Sized 12 it presents in remarkable condition with minimal wear and handling one of the best preserved examples ever to surface and certainly one of the most important. This is the only 1956 NFL Championship ring ever issued to Vince Lombardi.
Comes directly from the Lombardi family with a letter signed by his son Vince Lombardi Jr.
