This unopened 1961-62 Fleer Basketball wax box is a crown jewel containing some of the most significant basketball cards in the hobby, highlighted by the rookies of Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and Oscar Robertson. Fleer’s inaugural basketball issue has a 66-card checklist loaded with Hall of Famers and stars. 44 different players are represented, half of which also have special action shot versions (“In Action”).
Authenticated by Steve Hart from Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE), this elusive 24-pack box of hardcourt legends remains one of the toughest and most expensive unopened products as evidenced by the limited comps since 2021 that have sold between $372,000 and $460,000 at auction. The colossal spike of Wilt’s coveted #8 base rookie since COVID sure makes ripping these 6-card packs tempting. An SGC 10 sold privately for $1.7 million in September 2024. PSA 9 results since 2021 range from $200k to $670K. (None of the four PSA 10s have been offered publicly to our knowledge.) Furthermore, the #3 Baylor, #43 West, and #36 Oscar rookies in PSA 9 are now selling for close to six figures.
Other Hall of Famers with key rookie cards in this set are #1 Al Attles, #4 Walt Bellamy, #16 Hal Greer, #22 K.C. Jones, #23 Sam Jones, and #44 Lenny Wilkins [sic]. More notables include #10 Bob Cousy, #19 Tom Heinsohn, #34 Bob Pettit, and #38 Bill Russell. Key “In Action” cards from #’s 44-66 are #47 Chamberlain, #49 Cousy, #61 Robertson, #62 Russell and #66 West.
At present time, 112 of the 45,000+ PSA-encapsulated ’61 Fleer cards (< 0.25%) have received a 10 GEM MINT grade, while only 3.25% have been graded MINT 9. Like kids in the candy store, some collectors may not have the self-discipline to keep from breaking into this box and attempting to hit the jackpot with a high-grade Wilt. That’s a big risk, especially with the stricter grading standards nowadays, but it could be worth it. Whatever path the winning bidder chooses, we won’t judge. The thrill of the unknown is what makes this hobby fun and keeps us young.
The blue and white box, advertising 24 five-cent packs with Fleer Dubble Bubble gum, measures 8” by 1-7/8” and remains in excellent, tamper-free condition. Authenticated by Baseball Card Exchange and sealed with BBCE-branded shrink wrap, it has a Steve Hart/BBCE COA (X0201) attached to the bottom.
