Collectors of John L. Sullivan, take a drag of this: a late 19th century wooden cigar box celebrating the "Boston Strong Boy" as the world's first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, a title he held from 1882 to 1892. Measuring 9.75" by 20.5" by 3" and made by Lichten Brothers of Philadelphia (a prominent cigar manufacturer in the 1890's), the top lid and three sides all read "John L. Sullivan's". The inside of the lid is painted in burgundy and reads, "The Worlds Champion - John L. Sullivan" in large gold script. "Manufactured only by Lichten Bros., Philadelphia" is also painted on the interior.

The large rectangular box comes in all-original, VG condition. The lid is warped and one of the three hinges is missing its pin. Remnants of the ancient cigar brand seal are still attached on the outer lid. Few cigar boxes from the 1800's have survived, and this represents one of the earliest known examples of celebrity/athlete product endorsement. Be a real man and smoke the cigars that John L. Sullivan prefers.
