The 1984 thoroughbred horse-racing season was a busy one for owner Eugene V. Klein and his spirited team involving their prized two-year-old fillie named “Tiltalating.” And at the Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport New Jersey Klein’s horse owned the track having won both the Colleen Stakes on July 24 as well as the Sorority Stakes on August 4. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas and ridden by jockey Pat Valenzuela during both races Tiltalating won the six-furlong race at the Sorority Stakes with a time of 1:10.80 which was preceded by her victorious romp at the Colleen Stakes two weeks earlier. This lot features three different championship trophies: two from the ’84 Sorority Stakes and one from the Colleen Stakes.

The first trophy in the shape of a two-handled vase measures 11” tall but sits atop a four-inch-tall wooden base that measures six inches wide by six inches deep. Made of what appears to be Silverplate and weighing almost four pounds without the base the somewhat tarnished vase is specially engraved on the front with the following text: “SORORITY WON BY TILTALATING MONMOUTH PARK August 4 1984.” The accompanying trophy to the Sorority Stakes race is a sterling silver hallmarked pitcher (678 grams) manufactured by Reed & Barton that stands 7.5 inches tall. Also heavily tarnished the front of the pitcher is engraved: “THE SORORITY STAKES Monmouth Park Won By TILTALATING August 4 1984.”

The third piece to this trifecta of trophies is the championship award presented to the team of Tiltalating following her victory at The Colleen Stakes. Standing exactly a foot tall and 11 inches wide the two-handled sterling silver hallmarked beauty (1104g) is engraved “THE COLLEEN STAKES Monmouth Park Won By TILTALATING July 24 1984” across the front. Also showing some signs of tarnishing it still presents beautifully.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
