Even though he was forty years old in 2000 Tony Gwynn displayed the same hard-nose style of play that typified his Hall of Fame career. When he underwent knee surgery after hitting a disappointing .196 at the beginning of the season Gwynn came back better than ever and dramatically slugged his way to finish the year with a .323 average. This was his 18th consecutive season of .300 or better and a tribute to his determination to excel despite the obstacles thrown up against him.
Gwynn’s 2000-2001 home white pinstripe jersey has “PADRES” across the chest in navy and orange tackle twill. Russell label is sewn in the lower left front tail. No size tag is present but the jersey appears to be in the size 48-52 range. The left sleeve has the orange and navy Padres logo patch and an embroidered Russell logo in navy. The back has “GWYNN” across the shoulders in navy tackle twill and his number “19” below in orange navy and white tackle twill. “Mr. Padre” has signed the “1” very nicely in silver pen making this colorful Padres jersey all the more attractive. The jersey exhibits light game use with some turf and pine tar stains throughout. A museum-worthy piece that dates from Gwynn’s final years in the majors.
