The great Tony Gwynn was considered one of Major League Baseball’s finest hitters ever. His .338 lifetime batting average and 3141 hits speak volumes as to his ability to slap his hits to all sides of the field whenever he came to bat. An eight-time National League batting champ Gwynn passed away in 2014 due to salivary gland cancer. He was 54 years old.This lot celebrates Gwynn’s prolific career as a member of the San Diego Padres. He played 20 seasons in America’s Finest City. Twice he led the team to the World Series (1984 and 1998) and although the team came up short in its quest at a world championship Gwynn continued to shine on baseball’s biggest.
Five different items have been signed by the late rightfielder including a pair of oversized (35” wide by 35” high) limited edition color lithographs honoring his 2007 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It shows a content grinning Gwynn sitting inside a dugout wearing his Padres home uniform with his preferred weapon of choice leaning on his left shoulder. Gwynn has added his large pencil autograph on the lower left of each print with "HOF 2007" inscribed. One of the prints is numbered 28/110 (unframed) while the other framed version is numbered 45/110. The next signed and framed item is a poster (19” wide by 25” high) that shows Gwynn in his Padres road uniform wearing sunglasses holding on to six of his eight N.L. Batting Champion bats. It is entitled “SIX – BATMAN FOREVER.”
The next framed piece is a color panoramic photograph of Petco Park shot during the newly built stadium’s first actual baseball game which was held on March 11 2004 during San Diego State’s Aztecs Invitational game against the Houston Cougars. Before a crowd of 40106 fans the Aztecs pulled out a 4-0 victory. Gwynn signed the print in silver on the bottom right corner. It is numbered #7 of 2004. The fifth and final piece to this lot is a commemorative 1998 World Series bat (numbered X OF 500) that Gwynn has signed in slightly faded silver on the black barrel. He added “#19” after his signature. The 33” Louisville Slugger bat includes an engraved silver logo of the 1998 World Series.
