While there are many Jackie Robinson action shots circulating the hobby, few showcase his most daring skill with such precision as this incredible 1948 original photo. It took some research, but we were able to conclusively determine that this scene at home plate occurred on July 21, 1948, when Robinson attempted to steal home at Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs catcher pictured is Bob Scheffing, who was able to tag out Jackie within a pile of dust. In the top of the 9th inning, Jackie had tripled to drive in two runs and then got greedy trying to swipe home. The Dodgers beat the Cubbies by a score of 9-3 that day.Whoever took this shot from the AP did a remarkable job of capturing the moment, with each subject -- umpire, catcher, base runner and on-deck hitter -- perfectly positioned within the frame. What makes this PSA/DNA Type 1 photo even more special is the fact that it originated from Bob Scheffing's personal collection. After his playing career, Scheffing enjoyed a successful career as manager of the L.A. Angels (PCL), Cubs and Detroit Tigers, before a long tenure as Scouting Director and GM of the New York Mets during championship run of the late 1960s and early '70s.The photo was initially sized at 8-1/8" by 10-3/4" (as indicated on PSA/DNA LOA) with a large white border on the bottom. For improved aesthetics and display purposes, it has been cut down to dimensions of 6.25" by 10.5" which will allow it to be holdered if the buyer so chooses. It presents in outstanding condition with exceptional image clarity. The reverse is stamped by the Associated Press with editorial notes in pencil and pen (wrong year indicated).
