In June of '68 the New York Yankees' selected Thurman Munson with the number one pick in the amateur Free Agent Draft. Munson's pro career began with brief stints with the Binghamton Triplets in the Eastern League and the Syracuse Chiefs prior to being called up by the Yankees during the '69 season. Munson played so well during the remainder of the '69 season that he won the job of starting catcher in spring training of 1970. Proving he was more than ready for the task Munson posted a .302 batting average with 26 doubles 137 hits and 53 RBI's in his first full big league campaign. Equally if not more impressive than his prowess at the plate was Thurman's defensive skills and unrookie-like team leadership. In a rare nearly unanimous vote Munson was bestowed with the prestigious Ford Frick Award as the American League Rookie of the Year.
Presented here is the award plaque Munson received for this prestigious honor. The black painted wooden plaque measures 11" tall with an applied Ford Frick Award emblem at the top. The bottom portion of the plaque features a metal placard inscribed "1970 Thurman L. Munson New York Yankees". The award plaque remains in its original condition with some surface crazing to the black paint at a small area on the right border and some natural oxidization to the emblem and placard plating. The award retains its original Dieges & Clust mfg. label on the reverse. Originating from the personal estate collection of Thurman Munson this is certainly one of the most significant Major League player Rookie of the Year awards ever offered at public auction.
Includes a signed letter of provenance from Diana Munson.
