The late Thurman Munson was taken from the New York Yankees family far too soon. On August 2 1979 Munson was practicing takeoffs and landings in his own private plane at the Akron-Canton (Ohio) Regional Airport when it crashed short of the runway. Munson the Yankees team captain the first since Lou Gehrig died as a result. He was just 32 years old. This lot features an original oil on canvas painting by sports artist Doo S. Oh paying tribute to the man who led the Yankees to three straight World Series appearances from 1976 to 1978 and two consecutive World Series championships in 1977 and 1978. Beautifully matted and framed the 35 x 43 painting features three action images of Munson and has been autographed in silver by 25 members of the Yankees back-to-back (1977 and 78) World Series championship teams as well as Oh (bottom right corner in orange paint). Notable player signatures include Hall of Famers Goose Gossage and Reggie Jackson along with Graig Nettles Mickey Rivers Ron Guidry Roy White Sparky Lyle and Lou Piniella. A moving tribute to one of Major League Baseballs grittiest and most respected players ever.
