In 1924 a dramatic nickname coined by poetic sportswriter Grantland Rice and the quick-thinking actions of a clever student publicity aide transformed the Notre Dame backfield of Stuhldreher Crowley Miller and Layden into the most fabled quartet in college football history the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. In 1924 lead by coach Knute Rockne they completed an undefeated season with a win over Stanford in the Rose Bowl. They were declared National Champions one of the greatest Notre Dame teams in history.
The offered display piece includes an oversized 10 ½ by 13 ½ original photograph of The Four Horsemen adhered to a matte board. The signature of Don Miller appears on the photo with the salutation Best Wishes. The signatures of all Four Horsemen appear on the area of the matte board beneath the photo. Each large signature is flawlessly rendered in jet black ink rating 10 out of 10. A football shaped accoutrement is applied at the bottom center with handwritten titling. A secondary matte showcases the piece with total dimensions of 20 by 20. The photo shows minor creasing and a few surface abrasions with the matte board showing areas of minor toning and surface wear not affecting the autographs. All told this is one of the most visually impressive Four Horsemen display pieces weve encountered. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA.
