In 1982, Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Steve Sax was named League Rookie of the Year for which he was presented this Ford C. Frick award plaque. Sax made his first All Star appearance in his rookie season in 1982, batting .282 with 23 doubles and 49 stolen bases in his first full campaign. He would go on to play another six seasons in LA, culminating in a World Series title in 1988.
Manufactured by Dieges & Clust, the shield-shaped black wooden plaque has a sterling silver (hallmarked) raised relief bust of the Hall of Fame sportswriter and longtime MLB executive. Raised letters surround Frick's portrait reading "Ford C. Frick Award" above "Rookie of the Year" and crossed bats saying "American League." A sterling silver (hallmarked) nameplate engraved "1982 - STEVE SAX - LOS ANGELES DODGERS." The exquisitely crafted and designed award comes in NM overall condition. Includes LOA from Steve Sax.
A portion of the auction proceeds from all items sold in the Steve Sax Collection will benefit the foundation named for Steve’s son, John, who was one of five U.S. Marines killed in a training flight accident in June 2022 in the California desert. The Capt. John J. Sax Foundation “serves to support those who choose to further their education, exploration and passion for flight."
