The spring of 1936 brought the coming of the most anticipated rookie in Yankees history thus far – a kid from San Francisco named Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio had torn up the Pacific Coast League, cultivating a headline-grabbing 61-game hitting streak in 1933 and batting a prodigious .398 in 1935. His appearance in the Yankees 1936 spring camp drew the attention of all the beat writers and photographers, eager to get a glimpse at the team’s next big star. Taken in March of 1936, this beautifully composed action shot captured the 21-year-oldrookie hopeful as he demonstrates the swing which will soon make him famous. Clad in a crisp new set of home white pinstripes, this is among the earliest photos that show DiMaggio in a Yankees uniform. Card collectors will note that this is the image that was used for DiMaggio’s 1937 series 7 Wheaties card. The Type 1 photo shows some edge wear, most noticeably along the top left edge. There is some slight wrinkling to the surface when viewed at certain angles and overall golden toning from age. The 6 1/2 x 8 1/2” photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1
