At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome Bill Nieder won the gold medal in the shot put as he defeated 2-time defending Olympic champion Parry O'Brien. That capped off an incredible year for Nieder who broke the world record three times leading up to the Olympics. This is the shot put Nieder used to set those three world records! He increased each throw from 63 feet 10 inches (3/19/1960) to 65'7" (4/2/60) and finally to 65'10" (12/8/60) becoming the first to surpass 20 meters. Nieder took the silver medal at the 1956 Melbourne Games following a stellar college career at the University of Kansas where he won the 1955 NCAA title and became the first collegiate athlete to throw the 16-lb. shot over 60 feet. After years of playing second fiddle to Parry O'Brien considered the greatest American shot putter in history Nieder got his revenge in Rome.

Presented by the International Amateur Athlete Federation the regulation-size shot is mounted on a 14" by 9" by 1" thick wooden plaque. To the right is a metal nameplate with "W. NIEDER" and "WORLD RECORD HOLDER" engraved listing the three world records William (Bill) Nieder set in 1960 (with distance date & location). What a unique and special piece of American history in a lovely display!Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
