Offered here is an original turnstile from Shibe Park one of baseball's most legendary stadiums. This fully functional turnstile with bottom pedal is one of the twelve originally installed at Shibe Park in 1909. Shibe Park opened in 1909 and was the first concrete-and-steel stadium in the Major Leagues. Literally millions of fans have passed through this very turnstile. A state-of-the-art facility at the time of its construction the park was home to both the Philadelphia Athletics (1909-54) and Philadelphia Phillies (1938-70). It was also the home site of the National Football League Frankford Yellow Jackets (1920s) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1940-42 1944-57). Shibe Park (renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953) was eventually demolished in 1976. Luckily a part of the stadium's long and rich tradition lives on in this unique and evocative souvenir. Turnstiles are much rarer than stadium seats and make for a wonderful display piece in any home museum or office large enough to accommodate them. This turnstile retains traces of original period paint and exhibits overall wear inclusive of paint chipping and rusting but is completely intact. The turnstile can be easily restored to its original appearance and measures 37 inches high and 41 inches wide. Due to the weight and size of this piece it is the buyer’s responsibility to arrange pick-up or third party shipping.

Provenance: The offered turnstile was acquired by the Newport Sports Museum from Leland’s auction house in 1995. Prior to this auction it has been displayed at the Newport Sports Museum since 1995. Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
