By 1936, Lou Gehrig had presumably been photographed from every angle, which prompted some creativity on this particular example. This stunning aerial image shows Gehrig follwoing through on his majestic left-handed swing after launching a high fly ball. Based on the "Sept. 21" stamped caption on the back from the Associated Press, it was likely snapped during New York's doubleheader against Washington at Yankee Stadium on September 20th. The team split the twin bill that day and Gehrig went hitless in seven at-bats, a rarity for Larrupin' Lou during a monster season (.354, 49 HR, 152 RBI, 167 runs, 130 BB vs. 46Ks) in which he claimed his 2nd AL MVP award. The Bronx Bombers capped off a 102-51-2 regular season by defeating the NY Giants in a classic six-game World Series.
The unique perspective of this original 7x9" photo that captures Gehrig's face in a calculating squint makes it one of the most artisitic shots ever taken of the Iron Horse. In addition, the crystal clarity of Lou's Lousiville Slugger bat could make this an extremely valuable shot to photo-match the bat should it ever surface in the hobby. The edges show some wear, most noticeable along the bottom. The verso has the AP's original 1936 caption slug along with a 1938 dated newspaper clipping from the photo’s re-use. The photo has been encapsulated as Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
