In 1956, Jackie Robinson was in his 10th season with the Dodgers. Over his decade with the team, Robinson had helped lead Brooklyn to five pennants and their first and only World Championship. On September 30, 1956, those present in Ebbets Field watched in anticipation as the pennant came down to the wire. The Milwaukee Braves were a game back and if the Dodgers lost and Braves won, a playoff would be necessary. Fortunately Brooklyn kept Pittsburgh at bay with a win while the Braves won in St. Louis.
Besides being the pennant clincher for Brooklyn, this game was the final regular season game for Jackie Robinson. Jackie didn’t disappoint–he hit a solo homer off Pirates starter Bob Purkey in the third inning, the 137th of his career. The Dodgers went on to win the game 8-6, giving Don Newcombe his 27th win of the season. One non-Dodgers highlight of the game was Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente’s 2-hit, 2-RBI day complimented with a stunning throw from right field to catch Gil Hodges trying to score at home plate in the bottom of the 8th. This ticket stub shows light wear, with slightly rounded corners and some scuffing on the edges. Encapsulated as Authentic by PSA, it remains in good shape overall, perhaps capable of receiving a number grade. With a total PSA population of 24 of these stubs encapsualted, and only five higher than PSA GD 2, might be worth a shot. Seems like it should grade FR to VG in our eyes.
