This section of pole vault cross bar became a piece of track and field history on May 29 1937. It was the Pacific Coast Conference meet held at the Los Angeles Coliseum near the University of Southern California campus. That day USC teammates Earle Meadows and Bill Sefton known as the "Heavenly Twins" each cleared 14 feet 11 inches (4.54 meters) to set a new pole vault world record. Sefton succeeded on his first attempt at the record height. Meadows the 1936 Olympic Gold medalist at the Berlin Games had to wait until his 3rd and final attempt to clear the record height. The two were not able to attempt 15 ft (4.57 m) that day as the standards maxed out at 14' 11" and the bar could not be raised any higher.

The 17 1/4 inch triangular piece of wood is painted half black half white on two sides. The third side is clean unpainted tan wood with Earle Meadows' autograph in beautiful black 8-9/10 black marker. It also includes the following notations: "SECTION OF POLE VAULT CROSS BAR"; "DONATED TO HELMS HALL BY MARSHALL CROMWELL" (son of legendary USC and USA Olympic track coach Dean Cromwell); WILLIAM SEFTON EARLE MEADOWS UNIV. OF SO. CALIFORNIA"; "14 FEET 11 INCHES WORLD POLE VAULT RECORD"; "MAY 29TH 1937 LOS ANGELES COLISEUM". Overall it is in tact in VG-EX condition with only one end showing a small piece chipped off the corner. What an incredible piece of world record history!

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.

Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
