The San Diego Chargers (who now reside in Los Angeles) routinely awarded their top lineman of the year with a special trophy entitled the “Willie the Walrus Award.” The tradition started back in 1971 exactly 10 years after the Chargers established San Diego as their home. Designed appropriately enough with a wooden sculpture of a walrus on top – complete with a pair of tusks sticking out of its mouth - the trophy stands exactly three feet tall. The three-tiered trophy features two levels of wood followed by a third level of brass upon which Wallie rests.

The front of the trophy includes a large 12-inch tall black plaque engraved with the first 19 names (1971 to 1989) of the linemen recipients of the award followed by a smaller engraved black plaque with the next three recipients through the 1992 NFL season. In those first 22 years Doug Wilkerson certainly earned his keep as he earned top honors in seven different seasons. Lee Williams and Ed White were next with three nods apiece while Jim Lachey and Leslie O’Neal both won it twice. The trophy weighs 13-and-a-half pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
