Conventional hobby wisdom suggests that collectors should avoid sending valuable rookie cards to players to be autographed and opt instead for less-expensive pasteboards for such tasks. This standout 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie card would seem to be the exception to the rule until you remember that there was no such thing as a rookie card in 1955. A notarized letter from the card's original owner (included with the lot) explains that he sent the card to Clemente in 1955 in care of the Pittsburgh Pirates asking that he sign it and return it in the enclosed envelope. Done and done. PSA/DNA attests to the first part of the equation anointing the Clemente autograph with a NM-MT 8 grade and subsequently entombing it in appropriate fashion. While the PSA/DNA 8 refers only to the autograph the card in question can fairly be described as Ex. The second part of the equation is addressed by the aforementioned notarized letter where the original owner testifies to having sent the card to Clemente and then hanging onto it for 37 years before selling it in 1992.
