One would be hard-pressed to come up with a better symbol of a head coach’s authority than his whistle. This small piece of pressed metal is the tool with which a coach both sets in motion and directs his team during his most important teaching moments. This small group collects three of these symbols of authority all used by legendary head coach Red Holzman in practices and scrimmages dating to his Knicks reign in New York from the late 1960s to the early '80s when he delivered two championships to New York. The first is an English-made Acme “Thunderer” model marked on its side with the iconic “abc” Sports logo. The second is a duplicate of the previous one but without the “abc” branding on its side. This one shows light toning and some tarnish from age. The last is a black-painted Acme larger than the other two and showing just slight wear from use. Since only referees are allowed the use of whistles during games there is no footage of Red blowing these very whistles. But we can certainly imagine the powerful and intimate moments each piece of metal was a part of helping to shape the lives and careers of Hall of Famers like Willis Reed Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley.
