After graduating from Brooklyn’s Franklin K. Lane High School in 1938 Red Holzman enrolled at the University of Baltimore. After two years he transferred to the City College of New York where he played for legendary coach Nat Holman (one of the “Original Celtics”) and built up a reputation as one of the best college basketball players in the east. His college career culminated in being named All-American in 1942. This colorful full uniform was worn by Red Holzman for one of his College All-Star games during his time at CCNY.
The royal blue durene jersey has Holzman’s number “13” in white tackle twill surrounded by six red tackle twill stars. The neck and sleeve openings are ringed in red and white trim. The same design is repeated on the back of the jersey and a size 42 Horace Partridge label is sewn inside the lower middle shirttail. The matching royal blue satin trunks continue the patriotic scheme with red and white stripes trim down both thighs and waist. The classic pair of shorts tagged inside the rear by Horace Partridge as size 34 comes complete with its vintage blue silk belt and silver buckle which shows some rusting from age.
The jersey shows appropriately light game use with some loose threads and puckering while the trunks have a couple isolated spot stains to the elegant silk material. An incredibly rare College All-Star uniform from one of the NBA’s greatest coaches who was a darn good player in his day as well. This is the earliest known Red Holzman game-worn jersey; in 2008 his late 1940s Rochester Royals jersey sold for $30000. This nearly 80-year-old piece of roundball history has been immaculately preserved and comes directly from the late Red Holzman’s personal collection with a letter from his family.
