Described in The New York Times in 2008 as what "might be the best educational effort in the country" the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is a national notforprofit organization founded in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of Jackie Robinson through the advancement of higher education among underserved populations. The Jackie Robinson Foundation Awards Dinner is held annually at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. For nearly three decades the iconic event pays tribute to individuals who embody the humanitarian ideals of Jackie Robinson and raises funds for the Jackie Robinson Foundation. In 1987 Red Auerbach received this "Robie" award from the Jackie Robinson Foundation for his "...Outstanding Record as a Successful Business Leader Positive Role Model and Pioneer In Your Efforts to Open Up Professional Basketball." The award consists of two 12" by 10" hinged lucite panels one with titling and descriptive text and the other with an actual vintage photograph of Jackie Robinson in his Brooklyn Dodgers uniform screwed down between two panels. A very fine quality award symbolizing a prominent recognition. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
