The coaches for the 1972 All-Star Game were both disciples of Red Auerbach with Tommy Heinsohn at the helm of the East team and Bill Sharman for the West. Los Angeles Lakers guard Jerry West thrilled hometown fans at the Los Angeles Forum with a last-second 20-foot jump shot on the run to give the West an exciting 112-110 victory over the East. West's heroics in the clutch won him the MVP Award and he tied for his team's lead in scoring with 13 points. Boston's Dave Cowens was outstanding for the East. He outplayed giants Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain under the boards and with 11 seconds remaining scored a jump shot to climax a rally that tied the game 110-110. Cowens wound up with 14 points 1 fewer than Celtics teammate John Havlicek. In commemoration of the game Red Auerbach received this honorary clock. The fine quality LeCoultre clock is housed in a 9 1/2" tall brass case with glass on all sides. An engraved placard affixed to the front of the base reads "Arnold Auerbach NBA All-Star Game Los Angeles Forum - January 18 1972." A small metal rendering of the Forum is affixed to the case above the placard on front. The clock shows no structural faults and remains in working order. A photo from a 1970's Sports Illustrated feature on Auerbach shows this clock on the mantle above his fireplace in his Washington DC home. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
