"Gods do not answer letters." -John Updike

On September 28 1960 at Bostons Fenway Park Red Sox legend Ted Williams hit a home run in the last at-bat of his 21-year career. The drama poignancy and brilliance of the moment defies embellishment.

Ted Williams once said it was his goal in life to "walk down the street [and have] folks say there goes the greatest hitter who ever lived." He succeeded. Presented here is a full ticket to the September 28 1960 game between the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox played at Fenway park in which the Hall of Fame slugger belted his 521st career home run in the final at bat of his career. After a very disappointing season in 1959 Ted bounced back in 1960 at 42 years of age and hit .316 with 29 home runs. In the eighth inning of his final game at Fenway Williams stepped to the plate for what he and many others knew would be the last time. Almost as if scripted in Hollywood Williams pulled a 1-1 pitch from Baltimore Oriole pitcher Fat Jack Fisher into the Red Sox bullpen. After rounding the bases Ted as was his custom stubbornly refused to take off his hat to acknowledge the cheering fans in a nearly empty Fenway and ran straight into the Boston dug out never to play again. Writer John Updike who famously memorialized Williams' last at-bat in the short story "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" published October 22 1960 in The New Yorker said of the moment "Gods do not answer letters." This extremely rare unused ticket slabbed SGC Authentic has several creases including a rather severe vertical one between the rain check and ticket portion on the right hand side. 3 punch/cancellation holes are present along the bottom edge. Vintage ink notation on back says "last game Ted Williams pitched." This is one of only 2 full tickets to this historic game known to exist.
