On November 28, 1968, photographer Jeffrey Mayer was hired to document Jimi Hendrixs performance at the New York Philharmonic. After the gig, Mayer attended a belated 26th birthday party backstage for Jimi, who was born on November 27. In a filmed interview with Mayer, the photographer remembers Hendrixs off-stage personality as low key and the antithesis to the energetic performance he had just witnessed. This casual snap captures Jimi enjoying a can of Rheingold Extra Dry Lager still resplendent in his stage attire of exotic jewelry and psychedelic patterned shirt. A great photo of Jimi at the very top of career, basking in the glow of being a 26-year-old rockstar with a number 1 album on the charts. As wildly popular as he was, very few Type 1 photos of Hendrix exist, with this being a particularly clear and unique example by a noted photographer. The image has been printed to the edges and displays some wear, most noticeably along the bottom edge. The reverse has two cancelled copyright stamps along with “Jimi Hendrix and a catalog number handwritten in pencil. The photograph measures 8 x 10 and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
