It was 37 years after he first put on a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform that the great Honus Wagner took it off for the last time. This 1952 press photo captures the greatest shortstop in the game looking relaxed and posing with his cleats, uniform jersey and bats. Honus was 78 at the time and had seen it all in his career – from the first World Series to the advent of plane travel for all teams. While the retirement of Babe Ruth is captured in the dramatic “Babe Bows Out” photo, this quiet moment depicting Flying Dutchman's retirement befits his reserved and dignified personality perfectly.
