In 1928 the New York Yankees not only avenged their 1926 World Series loss to the Cardinals but they did so in a commanding four-game sweep.
In spite of numerous injuries including the Babe with a bad ankle the men in Pinstripes set themselves to the business of winning the first three tilts of the Series setting the stage for a memorable Game 4 clincher on October 9th. The setting was Sportsman’s Park St. Louis. The Cardinals drew first blood as they pushed a run over the plate in the bottom of the 3rd. Ruth answered with a dinger in the 4th but the Cardinals scored again in their half of the inning. Neither team scored again through the 6th inning. But in the top of the 7th Ruth drilled another home run and Gehrig promptly smacked one as well. Crushing the life out of the Cardinals New York scored two more runs in the 7th. Too soon Ruth came to the plate again - in the 8th - and as if the coffin needed another nail he belted his third home run of the game. The 7-3 victory for the Yankees sealed the 4 games to none World Series conquest over the Cardinals.
Presented here is a complete set of four ticket stubs to each of the four 1928 World Series games including the Ruth 3-homer game 4 clincher. All four tickets originate from the estate of the original user and have been well preserved. The ticket stubs have been graded by PSA as follows: Game 1 (Yankee Stadium) EX 5; Game 2 (Yankee Stadium Gehrig WS HR #1) EX-MT 6; Game 3 (Sportsman’s Park Gehrig WS HR #2 & #3) VG 3; Game 4 (Sportsman’s Park Babe Ruth’s finest World Series game 3 HR) GD 2.
