In 1993 Fossil created a high-quality collector's watch set called "The Greatest" honoring Muhammad Ali complete with cherry wood box metal container and a COA from Fossil displayed at the top of the box. The Fossil watch has a metallic face (made of brass or bronze) engraved intricately on the front "3 TIME WORLD CHAMPION MUHAMMAD ALI" with an artistic depiction of his face. The black wristband is made of fine genuine leather. It comes displayed inside the wood box within the base of a 2 1/2" by 5 1/2" tin container with an Ali photo-themed lid for the container displayed to the left. Perhaps the most impressive part of the whole watch ensemble is the outside of the 8 1/4" by 9 1/4" and 2" thick wooden box - a matted and glass-enclosed 5 1/2" by 6 1/2" image of Neil Leifer's iconic black & white shot of Ali standing over Liston after delivering the knockout "Phantom Punch." Ali has signed the image in perfect 10/10 silver paint pen. Aside from a few scratches to the wooden box the set comes in near pristine condition all enclosed in its original packing cardboard box from Fossil.
The second part of this lot is a rare collector's piece courtesy New Era Cap part of their 59FIFTY fitted series. Only 288 of these limited-edition "CAPTURE THE FLAG" hats were made and released in 2010. The design pays homage to Muhammad Ali's historic Olympic gold medal victory on September 5th 1960 at the Rome Summer Games. Reminiscent of his uniform the cap is white leather with red white and blue satin stripes and emblazoned with his stitched signature on the front. The underside features a white satin lining with a gold imprint of a waving American flag and the words "Celebrating 50 Years" and the strip tag with the quote "First time in my life I ever slept on my back. Had to or the medal would have hurt my chest." The Muhammad Ali Enterprises logo featuring his classic open-armed stance appears on the backside. Two Muhammad Ali Enterprise holograms are stuck to the underside of bottom of the bill with the size 7 3/8 sticker. What separates this one from the standard editions is that Ali's autograph in 9/10 silver appears on the front of the blue. The cap comes in its gorgeous original black presentation box lined with beige satin on the interior and a small mirror at the top.
The Fossil watch and photo set comes with COA from Fossil confirming its edition number in the series (3180/7500). The New Era hat set comes with a COA card from Muhammad Ali Enterprises with a hologram sticker matching the one on the hat. There is also a card inside the box indicating it is #262/288 in the series.
