After helping his Indiana high school become the first all-black school to win the state championship Oscar Robertson matriculated to the University of Cincinnati in 1957. Robertson averaged 33.8 points per game and won the national scoring title each of the three years he played for the Bearcats. Along the way he set 14 NCAA records and then went on to represent the U.S. at the 1960 Olympics taking home a Gold Medal. By this time “The Big O” was a well-known star frequently being featured in newspaper sports pages national publications such as Sport Magazine.
In recognition of being the greatest college basketball player since their founding in 1946 Sport Magazine named Robertson College Basketball’s Top Performer of the publication’s 15 years of existence. The honor came with two trophies a large version (Lot 28) and this smaller version standing 11" tall and weighing just under two pounds. A golden figure holding a basketball is mounted on a wooden podium flanked by two golden eagles. A golden placard reads “SPORT MAGAZINE FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY AWARD * Presented To OSCAR ROBERTSON 1946-1961 * COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOP PERFORMER OF THE FIFTEEN YEARS.” The trophy shows moderate wear from display and age with some tarnishing to the gold plating/washing. A nice complement to the bigger award presented to Oscar Robertson as the professional era of his Hall of Fame career was getting started. Includes LOA from Oscar Robertson.
Oscar will donate a portion of his auction proceeds to the Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center and LeBow Institute for Myeloma Therapeutics at Dana Farber. This renowned cancer treatment center “provides comprehensive care to patients with multiple myeloma including promising new therapies through clinical trials rooted in an approach that brings laboratory discoveries quickly to the clinical setting (https://www.dana-farber.org/multiple-myeloma-program).
