Beautiful barnstorming poster from Norfolk Virginia advertising the October 12 1949 exhibition contest between "Jackie Robinson and his Major League All Stars with Roy Campanella (Brooklyn Dodgers) Larry Doby (Cleveland Indians) vs the American League All Stars" at High Rock Park. The word "American" is in smaller different print and appears to have been added just for this poster. 14" by 22" poster features a 4" by 5" black and white photo of Robinson the 1949 National league Most Valuable Player at the top with smaller images of Brooklyn Dodger Hall of Fame teammate Roy Campanella and Cleveland Indian Hall of Famer Larry Doby below. The poster has green yellow and orange color tinting. and Robinson's All-Stars including fellow Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Larry Doby as well as Brooklyn Dodger 1949 Rookie of the Year Don Newcombe fell to the Jacksonville Eagles of the American Negro Association 4 to 2. Larry Doby drove in the only 2 runs for the All-Stars. The exhibition drew a crowd estimated at 12000 fans to High Rock Park better known as Tar Park the home of the New York Yankee farm club Norfolk Tars. To show Robinson's popularity contemporary newspaper accounts say several thousand fans were turned away on orders of the fire department that night. Poster has a couple of creases/small tears at left edge with some creases at the right. A diagonal crease goes through Robinson's photo but does not break the front surface paper and is more noticeable on the back. Bottom 4" of the poster has several horizontal creases which are more prominent on the back. Back has some light staining at center that does not touch the front. Original printing process black ink residue from the poster below is visible. Incredible piece of Jackie Robinson memorabilia this is the first we have ever encountered. Poster was printed by the Metropolitan Printing Company in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Have no doubts the poster will frame up beautifully. The consignor had the piece professionally framed a number of years ago and unfortunately we had to carefully remove it to assure the item's authenticity. Included with the lot are photo copies of 3 newspaper accounts of the game and the tour.
