Christy Mathewson believed his 1905 World Series performance was his greatest achievement:  in six days he pitched twenty-seven shutout innings allowing fourteen hits and one walk while striking out eighteen. This baseball is attributed to the final game at the Polo Grounds on October 14 which the Giants won 2-0. In arguably Matty’s greatest triumph his third consecutive World Series shutout.

"Philadelphia tried its best" The New York Times wrote the following day "but it was only a shadow reflecting the masterful Mathewson's will. He bestrode the field like a mighty Colossus and the Athletics peeped about the diamond like pigmies who struggled gallantly for their lives but in vain. Christy Mathewson the giant slabman may be legitimately designated as the pitching marvel of the century."

The offered ball is annotated on all panels including "1905" and "World's Championship" in highly stylized calligraphy. The east panel reads “Matty In The Box – Final Game – N.Y. Nat.-2  Phila. Am.-0”. The west panel reads “Seybold foul flied this ball into the Grand Stand caught by A.R. Rabe”.   All elements of the Spalding ball appear to be of proper age and style matching manufacturers specifications of Spalding balls produced between 1890 and 1907. This is a stirring object that transports the imagination to a pinnacle event of the deadball era.
