The 1928 Notre Dame football season was actually one of the worst of Knute Rockne’s tenure as his boys finished with just a 5-4 record. Yet, one game during that fateful season, played at Yankee Stadium on November 10, 1928, lives on in college football lore. At halftime of the contestbetween the Notre Dame and an undefeated Army squad, Rockne told his playersthe story of the tragic death of George Gipp, his former star halfback who died of pneumonia in 1920 during his senior season. As legend has it, Gipp lay in his hospital bed when he asked Rockne to tell his team to “win one for the Gipper” someday. Rockne's story inspired his Fighting Irish to a 12-6victory over the heavily favored Black Knights. Upon scoring the winning touchdown to seal the major upset, Notre Dame halfback Jack Chevigny famously yelled, "That's one for the Gipper!" Chevigny would later be killed in World War II in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

This is the only ticket stub from that memorable game that we've ever had the pleasure of auctioning. According to PSA's population report, there are only four in existence. Three are slabbed "Authentic" and only one has been given a grade. This "Authentic" example has rounded corners and heavy edge wear on the left side with a small crease at the top. Print and colors are clean and strong, front and back. What an incredibly important and scarce piece of football history to own!
