This lot features an aged trophy acknowledging the Navy Department’s U.S. Fleet Football Championship spanning the years 1925 to 1933.The top of the trophy features a weighty bronze sculpture of two football players– a ball carrier and a tackler – engaging in a hard-hitting scrum. The renownedartist who created the sculpture was J.L. Lambert. The magnificent sculpturerests on a two-tiered wooden base that measures 17.5” wide by 12.5” deep by sixinches tall. A metal band wraps around the top tier of the base and is engraved“FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP” on the front. The bottom portion of the trophy boats eight engraved badges acknowledging the winning teams from each of seasons chronicled. One season 1933 ended in a tie between the U.S.S. Maryland and the Submarine Divisions Battle Fleet. A lone raised metal seal is situated on the base in the middle of the engraved winners’ badges and reads: “NAVY DEPARTMENT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The trophy weighs 28 pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
