Mike Marshall was a fixture of the 1980’s LA Dodgers, manning right field from 1981 to 1989. Before debuting with the Dodgers halfway through the ’81 season, “Moose,” as the 6’-5” slugger was called, won the AAA Pacific Coast League’s Triple Crown with a .373 average, 34 homers and 137 RBI. The big outfielder bridged the gap between the 1981 Championship team of Valenzuela, Cey and Garvey with the 1988 Champs of Sax, Gibson and Scioscia. In between, Moose batted .273 and pounded 126 home runs. However, Marshall’s no holds barred, win at all costs style of play made him prone to injury, and he usually spent an average of 35 games on the DL each year. That changed in 1988 when Marshall avoided any serious injury all summer, playing in a career-high 144 games while batting .277 with 20 homers, 27 doubles and 82 RBI. In addition to playing his customary right field, Moose filled in at first when needed. His clutch hitting was one of the reasons the Dodgers won the pennant in 1988, especially when you see that he drove in 9th inning winning runs in two 1-0 regular season games. While the ’88 post season is personified by his teammate Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run in Game 1, Marshall himself added a single, triple and home run as the Dodgers beat Oakland, 4 games to 1.
Moose’s 1988 World Series ring has “1988 WORLD CHAMPION DODGERS” in raised letters surrounding a large .75 carat diamond mounted on a blue stone ringed by 20 approximately .25 carat diamonds. The left shank features the iconic intertwined “LA” logo with “MARSHALL” above and his number “5” below. The opposite shank has the classic Dodgers script logo above the World Series trophy with “LOS ANGELES DDGERS 1988 WORLD CHAMPIONS” engraved on its base. The interior bears the hallmark “1988 LA DODGER, INC. 14K BALFOUR.” The ring’s surface shows modest wear and minimal scuffing with a small ding on the “O” in “WORLD” on the ring’s face. A spectacular ring from one of the most memorable World Series’ in baseball history, issued to Mike Marshall, one of the players most responsible for getting the Dodgers there. Weight: 40 grams. Size: 12.
