Signed checks have long been a favored form of autograph collecting for many reasons. By nature they provide security from an authenticity standpoint as well as providing insight into a specific moment on a specific date in the signer's life. Interestingly the rarity of a check signed by a certain individual is not always commensurate with the rarity of their signature in general. Many individuals or their estates have checks destroyed for reasons of privacy while others save hoards of checks that make their way into the marketplace. In the case of Hall of Fame slugger Mel Ott one who's autograph is generally scarce no known quantity of his signed checks have ever been seen in the hobby leaving check collectors wanting. The search is about to end for one lucky collector with the offering of this April 17 1941 bank check from Art Flynn made out to the New York Giant Hall of Fame right fielder. Mel Ott has endorsed the back of the check with a strong 8/10 black steel tip pen "Mel Ott" signature. Written at bottom of check is "Art Flynn - early baseball agent/rep." giving some insight as to it's origin. The check itself is in pretty decent shape with three unobtrusive fold lines.
